R.M. Bucke’s book Cosmic Consciousness presents brief accounts of individual persons whom he considered had experienced “cosmic consciousness”. Bucke associated this cosmic consciousness with magnanimity, exaltation, forgiveness of others’ faults and failures, heightened sense of color, and other symptoms of mania or chronic schizophrenia.

(link) It’s known to psychologists that elevation of mood makes a person feel more generous and more forgiving. It’s also known that happiness expressed physically is appealing to other persons, so that a handsome, charming and dynamic person who is affected in this way and expresses this happiness is likely to attract followers on the basis of his friendly appearance and his kindly manner. Bucke suggests, and it’s probable that Jesus of Nazareth was affected by cosmic consciousness.

Cosmic consciousness has been experienced as a person who has been cured of a chronic physical disorder. Bucke reports several such cases. Furthermore, Ambrose Worrall and Olga Worrall are two modern healers whose ability was verified by hundreds of persons who testified they were healed by them. These healers didn’t try to promote themselves as messiahs. They were channels or conduits through which a healing potency was delivered from the Source to the sick person.

This Source has been difficult for critical thinkers to identify. Critical thinking is itself disturbed or over-ridden by cosmic consciousness, which is a kind of schizophrenia in modern psychiatric language.

If cosmic consciousness reduces critical thinking, the person so affected can’t be affected for long and compete successfully with intelligent and quick non-affected persons. The affected person may need to be attended to and cared for by non-affected persons. This would be advantageous only if the affected person had a very positive effect on others in his or her tribe or community.

An Accurate explaining of this “missing sense” wouldn’t be possible, and even today, the theoretical experts in physics or psychology can’t really explain cosmic consciousness.

If the cosmic mind is disabling, the persons who remain in cosmic consciousness won’t cope well at all, in ordinary social transactions. About one percent of the human population is schizophrenic. However those who do manage to compensate for the disability will have lost the cosmic consciousness or they will have enough extra ordinary intelligence to compensate. Persons with such superior intelligence won’t be common, but in a nation of 200 million persons there are approximately 2 million schizophrenics. In a world population of six billion humans, there are sixty million schizophrenics. So quite a few modern persons might seem to gullible people to be “messianic” or “cosmic” by virtue of their superior coping mechanisms.

In light of these considerations, it’s strange that there’s so much negativity in Fundamentalists who insist that only Mohammed was God, or that only Jesus was God, or that only some modern teacher (such as Reverend Moon) is “Messiah”. And it’s really a tragedy if there’s actually a therapeutic Source or Mind which is cosmic, and accessible to so many persons, but these schizophrenics are so disabled verbally and socially by this therapeutic process that they can’t make really sense of it and explain it clearly to intelligent persons as intelligent as you are.

A better understanding of this cosmic mind would clear up a lot of fear, confusion, misunderstanding, and hatred in modern thinking. This understanding of “The Messiah” and the “Cosmic mind” can be made scientific as more humans become subjects for careful experimental testing.

There is apparently a “missing mind” and a “missing sense” in humans, which when present makes a person less spiteful, less jealous, less negative, more magnanimous, and more energetic and physically healthy. If this is true, the problem is how a chronically depressed or otherwise chronically ill person can access this “missing sense” in himself and be cured.

Until the “missing science” of this “missing sense” is carefully worked out, the old Fundamentalist blocks and the old personality disorders will remain major barriers to personal fulfillment and to forging strong links of lasting peace between both different persons and different nations.
